What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing.  It was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro to effectively help people who have suffered from a trauma.  Trauma can be a small trauma which could include bullying, divorce, loss of a job or death of a pet to a large trauma which can include the death of a close loved one, war combat, rape, acts of violence or car accidents.  When some people experience a trauma, sometimes they become frozen in their emotional state.  Some people become so frozen that they develop PTSD, while others suffer from physical pain, depression, anxiety or other physical issues.  Using EMDR, the trauma is brought up in a warm and caring environment that allows the person who is suffering to think objectively about what happened and to process the memory so that they can become unfrozen. For some people, a trauma did not necessarily occur, but they are still suffering from chronic pain.  At the Wellness Counselors, we work with you to understand what has happened and help you manage your symptoms.  For some people, their symptoms went into remission.  There is hope for your situation, whatever that may be.
